First of all the two iris prints. In one of the pictures (the one with the drying rack) you can see the constant shifting of the colors. We had to somehow control that and Job Derksen was in charge of the colors and the inkbags this time. Thanks to him everything was under control. The second risk I took was with the density of the raster on the black layer. Never before have I printed such tiny pixels. It worked out but only just. If I'm totally honest I'm not hundred percent satisfied with the result. Somewhere in the progress I forgot to keep in mind that the colors would make the already dark black layer even darker. The result is a rather moody poster. Don't get me wrong I still like it but it was not entirely intended. In the slideshow you can see bags filled with ink. We cut a small piece out of the corner and could then precisely control the amount of ink and placement on the poster. I've been doing a lot of invitations and a logo and even a Ex-Libris stamp (all will be shown here one my site in the coming weeks). I've always enjoyed working with Jantine Wijnja and Daniel Dennis de Wit. They've been directors of HMK from 2008 till 2010 and during this time I was part of the team as well. Everything has to come to an end and nowadays HMK is run by new people and new ideas. Jantine and Dennis decided it was time for an overview of their years and so they contacted me to design their reunion-book. Jantine edited the book together with me last year and we asked all artists involved to send us A4's with new work for the book. Meanwhile I got a nice sponsor deal with robstolk my favorite offset printer. They sponsored 10! different pantonecolors and so I could make my dream book... a book that almost only exists of bright vibrant contrasting colors! I can die now. The book is for sale for 20 euros at the HMK location and I think it will be distributed to some bookstores as well. Netherlands Architecture Institute, Ymere and The municipality of Amsterdam One of the things I like most about being a graphic designer is that once in a while you get to do an entire campaign. In 2009 I was asked by Huib Haye van der Werf (at that time a curator at the Netherlands Architecture Institute) to help him shape the OPEN FORT 400 architectural competition. OPEN FORT 400 1609 was the year that Manhattan (NY, USA) was accidentally discovered by Henry Hudson while searching for an eastern passage to China. 400 years later, this feat was celebrated with many cultural events in both Amsterdam and New York. One of these events was the Open Fort 400 idea competition issued by the NAi, Ymere and the municipality of Amsterdam. People had to come up with ideas for a piece of wasteland in the North of Amsterdam. Starting point for the contestants was the "open fort" Henry Hudson built in Manhattan. It was a fortress, but since the native Americans and the first colonists had only peaceful intentions, the fortress was never actually closed. Of course it all became a lot bloodier after this first period. In sum: contestants were asked to submit ideas for an open fortress for the north of Amsterdam. Design briefing Huib was pretty straightforward with his briefing.
